Its worthwhile noting that from 8.1, these parameters are the not the same old "when we hit the threshold, do a full checkpoint". They more set a limit on how "out of date" your datafiles are allowed to get, that is, you end up with a changes dribbling out to the files rather than the big checkpoint spike.

Take a search on google, there has been some lengthy discussion on this very topic over the last few weeks
