Starting in VMS 7.0 or 7.1 (I forget which), you *can* use pipes:
$ GREP := SEARCH SYS$PIPE $ PIPE SHOW SYSTEM | GREP ora_
And it gets even better with "SET PROCESS/PARSE=EXTENDED" on the Alphas...
:)
