bash and most recent sh imlementations also support the ksh-style variable munging. bash makes it even simpler by adding escape sequences for PS1:
\u = user \h = host \W = basename( $PWD ) \$ = '#' if SU else '$'.
so:
PS1='\u@\h:\W \$ ';
gives username_at_hostname:dirname $ for normal users or ending with '#' if you are SU.
