Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> Re: Datafiles > 4gb
4G limit discussion aside - generally having any kind
of "thing" (segment/datafile/tablespace) get
excessively large is asking for trouble. Even the
best plans sometimes don't avoid the need for the
occasional move/rebuild/etc - and the larger the
quanta, the longer the downtime, the larger the risk
etc etc..
"Large" is a variable term - I've worked on db's where nothing file/tspace/etc was larger than 1G (the db was only about 40-50G); conversely, I've worked on a larger db where the datafiles were (raw) 12G, and we had 4 to a tablespace, simply because the 48G fitted nicely within on a disk cache used for hot backup...
As a rule of thumb (man I hate that term), I like to keep anything that I might need to take offline (eg file/tspace/table/index/etc) small enough so that I can do the maintenance without massive impact on the users.
