I have.
If there are problems on the system and the sysadmin will be booting and rebooting the machine more than once in order to fix/diagnose/etc. the problem, its a lot nicer if the database does not have to come up , go down multiple times. Plus have the possibly of getting taken down without being shut down.
I have also come across systems that get stuck in a loop upon booting. Boot. Crash. Boot. Crash. ....etc. How much damage might you do to a DB that gets aborted time after time after time just because the DBA did not want to risk being woken up.
I would rather have to be called than risk a damaged database.
You could always create a simple script for the admin to run when the machine is up for good in order to bring all the databases back up.

I've never encountered a reason for not starting production databases when a system boots.
If the system is going to need media recovery, you're gonna get called.
No point it waking me up at 3:00 AM unless absolutely necessary. :)

Just an informal survey:
Would *you* automatically start a production Oracle instance on a boot of
a
Unix box?
Why or why not? Something version/OS specific (or maybe some crazy OPS reason)?
The only reason I can come up with for "no" is that I'm thinking an
autostart on boot could interfere with a recovery scenario, although I'm
at
a loss to come up with a specific case, thus the question.
Geez, only 34 and my memory is fading...
