Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: To Autostart or not to Autostart
I've never used autostart. If a machine crashes, or is even going down for
maintenance,
I prefer knowing that it is back up and stable before starting the
instances. I've seen
systems come back up and then crash again shortly thereafter....usually
before getting
an all clear from the SysAdms....too many times to want to risk a secondary
crash of
the instance unnecessarily. Also it seems that if there is a crash, there
are usually
several reboots before anyone wants the DB up anyway. If it's a scheduled
downtime,
then I have procedures for the SysAdms to use, or I'm involved anyway, so
autostart still
isn't all the necessary.

I've always set up autostart. I don't like keeping the same hours as some of the system administrators I've worked with. Make sure the sys ad understands the procedure for bypassing the autostart when they need to. Keep your pager or cell phone turned on.

If you take RAC out of Oracle you get OLE! What can this mean?

Just an informal survey:
Would *you* automatically start a production Oracle instance on a boot of a Unix box?
Why or why not? Something version/OS specific (or maybe some crazy OPS reason)?
The only reason I can come up with for "no" is that I'm thinking an autostart on boot could interfere with a recovery scenario, although I'm at a loss to come up with a specific case, thus the question.
Geez, only 34 and my memory is fading...
