I used gtar --ignore-failed-read and it did give a msg that the file changed, but did not end in error as before. I was able to restore a functional db from the tape.
ALTER TABLESPACE TACPLUS_BINDEX BEGIN BACKUP db08/oradata/nemisys/tacplus_bindex01.dbf /opt/gnu/bin/gtar: db08/oradata/nemisys/tacplus_bindex01.dbf: file changed as we read it ALTER TABLESPACE TACPLUS_BINDEX END BACKUP
