"My application to McDonald's at the hourly rate of $40.00 has been
accepted. This includes medical, dental, and vacation benefits."
"Due to the great demands for my skills, my new rate is $60/hour W2"
"ROFLMAO. Since when did you start sending out joke emails??"
"Sure!! I'll take the job at $83.00/hour!! Since there is NO WAY IN HELL that I would do it for $38.00/hour, and I KNOW that you typoed it."
I guess your reply would be based upon your urgent need for this position. If your still interested, then I guess you can counter with $50/hour. It sounds like these days you have to do more negotiating to set your rate. If it's a new client then it could open up more doors for you. Goodluck!!

I just received the following email from a recruiter for a senior DBA production support 6 month contract position (plus tuning and application enhancement thrown into the mix) in the Dallas/Fort Worth metro area. I was submitted for the contract 2 months ago (at $60/hour W2) and subsequently was begged to reduce that to $55/hour (I reluctantly agreed and are now learning the hard way not to appear desperate or talk money up front, by the looks of it).

OK, Is there ANY way at all you could reduce your rate to $38.00/hour for
the xxxxx position?

Any suggestions for a suitable reply (I have several in mind but would like to remain courteous at this stage).
