Have you checked the value of SID written out to the sqlnet.log file when
that logon fails?
sqlnet.log should be in the directory where sqlplus is called from, either
current directory
if logging in from the command line or check the bin directory where sqlplus
lives. Also,
try turning on client trace to see what the difference is...do it both ways,
then diff the two.

Nope. I did check for that. Also, my friend discovered that revoking execute privs on that directory (/usr/users/oracle) also resolved the problem.
Seems wierd to me but maybe someone will have an explanation.
