The database portion of the (official) cloning process simply requires that you "copy the source database to the target". So, as long as you finish that phase with a running database of the appropriate SID, I don't see where cold/hot backup would matter. (Especially when your target would *probably* be on a different machine.)
I will state that many people find the cloning procedure (adclone.pl, etc.) somewhat confusing. So, from a simplicity standpoint, using a "cold" backup in the examples/instructions would tend to "keep it more simple".
