Just few more basic questions.. sorry.
Are there any ORA- errors?
Any OS error numbers?
What permission mask is set for the shared memory segments of this database?

No, actually I'm smarter than most Unix people that's why I posted this thread on an Oracle email list.

The permissions are 775 for the sqlplus binary.

I own the whole ORA_HOME directory and everything under it.

I am part of the osdba and osoper groups.
