Peter - I would appreciate a copy of your paper. We are making some
decisions on whether/how to proceed with replication.
Fun aside, what factors prompted you to create your own replication system?

Just a general comment on replication.
I built an in-house master-master asynchronous system (share Rachel's misgivings about synchronous). Its fun, but you have to do a lot of very careful thinking about what your objectives are, best way to implement, and then (as already alluded to) ensure you have a reporting infrastructure (preferably automated) which confirms that what has actually happened is what you expected and wanted to happen. As a final insurance, have a system which you can explicitly drive if a) someone wants something replicated NOW, or b) some sort of recovery is required. And yes, I have used it to facilitate migrations, which was like an unexpected bonus.
