by definition, a 24x7 shop would not be able to execute an offline
backup since that would mean that the database was not 24x7
Jeremiah's first post, pointing you to the note on his website did
answer your question.
bottom line, if your database is in archivelog mode, and you have an
uptime requirement that makes it difficult if not impossible to shut
the database down for the length of an offline backup, you can
certainly do ONLY online backups as long as you also backup the
archived redo logs
Offline backups are done for peace of mind, but are NOT necessary if
you have thoroughly tested your recovery procedures (as Tom already
pointed out)
