I don't think an "uninstall" or "deinstall" options is available for PatchSetReleases yet, at least in 8i. The standard recommendation is to backup the ORACLE_HOME (actually, backup the ORACLE_BASE which includes the orainventory directory) and the Database before you apply the patchset.
Anyway, why should the 8.1.7.4 patchset cause problems with long columns ? Look a Sev-1 TAR with Oracle if this is a production environment. Surely, this was a Test environment ?
