But when you rebuild, it will reestablish the pctfree in all of the index blocks. If you had a lot of activity this free space would have been used in the original index and is now reclaimed.

I should have put this in the original message. Indexes stayed in original tablespace with identical storage parameters, but number of extents went from 20 to 25 (each extents is 65 8-K blocks)
