I think that the main reason is response time.
An NT machine can get only 4 CPUs.
If you have all the CPUs and memory and the NT does not carry the load
then it is time to consider a change.
A change can be to Unix or to clustering. If you are all NT shop then I would consider clustering. In a mixed shop the move to Unix is easier, otherwise you will also need system administrator and have learning curve.

A question has been posed to me, when to switch from NT to unix for oracle.
Is it when the NT box starts getting out of memory issues, number of transactions, size of db?
just looking for some ball park answers.
