zombie extent

An associate is running a 8.1.5 db and he came to me with a horror story. I don't have specific info on the event, but it makes me wonder about the concept.

All users off the db, coming down for a cold backup. He said some extent owned by sys in TEMP ts was not released and so the db would not come cleanly or restart without an hour of recovery. I was wondering if I could get advice about how to investigate what process is associated with an extent. I am not sure how he associated the held TEMP extent with the hanging db.

A more generalized question is, if the db will not come down, how to poke and see what is hurt? I have a feeling this is closely guarded, secret sauce.
