Which Server Machine?

Hi,

What should be the basis of selecting a type of server machine? Single processor, two processor, four processor How many years down the road should one plan for?

In web deployment, the web server will have connection(s) with data server and can be configured for connection sharing. What role the number of connections between data and web server plays in server selection?

Please do give some solid guidelines.
