I think I can make the same claim - probably because I'm too lazy. But I have been known to say things like:
Value X is pretty big compared to value Y
Of course, X is often 'the amount of work you say you are doing' whilst Y is 'the amount of work the database is doing'.
But most of the time X is 'the amount of time it ought to take' and Y is 'the amount of time it does take'.
