Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> Re: Number of CPUs vs. Speed of CPUs
Lisa,
Always keep in the back of your mind that Oracle prices by CPU. In
reality go for as many as you can get or the box will hold and that will
allow for more and intensive applications in the future. It is easier to
have the CPU's on site then get them added to a budget.
If you have to reduce the number of CPU's that you can get I would get
the fastest the box will hold. Horse power can make a poor application
perform good, It doesn't fix the problem it just performs good. If you
work on the application and tune it you will really shine when the
applications fly.

We are in the process of sizing a new server for multiple Oracle
instances.
What factors are useful as input in determining how many CPUs and the
relative speed of them? For example, do we want fewer, faster CPUs or
do we
want more, slower CPUs? Are there any good guidelines to determine
what the
number of CPUs should be?
Thanks in advance -
Lisa
