Did the original problem happened after you started the database? If that's the case, is it possible, that the file in question was opened by some other application at the time you were starting the database?

STARTUP MOUNT
RECOVER DATABASE That fixed it and I'm back up and running.

I have a 8.1.7 database running on NT 4.0 that had a problem this morning and shut itself down. In the <SID>Alert.log I have the following error.

     file=10 J:\ORANT\ORADATA\TDISPACH\DISDATA01_01.DBF
     error=27072 txt: 'OSD-04008: WriteFile() failure, unable to write to

file
O/S-Error: (OS 5) Access is denied.'
DBW0: terminating instance due to error 1242 Instance terminated by DBW0, pid = 287

This is a new for me. Any ideas what I am dealing with?
