RE: Oracle From a Sybase DBA perspective

Part II of ???

The author states in point 1 "Oracle has no provision to store numbers in the computer's own native format, namely IEEE." I'm not sure what he means by "the computer's own native format", but the last I knew, IEEE was a set of software libraries on most machines, and not a "native format".

Case in point is my beloved VAX machines. Digital (and then Compaq) decided NOT to write IEEE libraries for the VAX (they *are* there on the Alphas), which prevents the machines from running lots of current software. Java comes to mind. Not that I'm arguing that it should run them, as the speed of the VAXen are not conducive to running a Java app (no kiddin!), but it's just an example.

Or am I the one that's full of hot air now? ;)

Dear list,

Feel like having a good rant? Need to take some frustrations out on lies, ignorance and misinformation?

I received a document from a friend that live in both the Sybase and Oracle worlds. He was interested in my comments on it as he recognized it as a rant against Oracle that was full of misinformation.

Oracle has it's problems, but if you want to rant about it's inadequacies, you should at least be accurate.

Some of the things in here I can't address, such as the IEEE number formats.
