Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Remote or Not? ... [VPN]
We are currently "testing" Cisco VPN (Win2000 server
with Oracle8i or 9i). Since so many people are getting
broadband at home, I guess that if things go well with
VPN for the the techies/admins, there might be
additional demand for other users to get their
exchange email natively (not OWA), map directories,
authenticate on AD, and do all the usual LAN stuff
remotely. Assuming the VPN can be made to work
smoothly, the IP settings for Oracle, sql server, etc.
will presumably be blocked at the firewall to stop
"outside" access.
Since I've got PacBell.net DSL, which defaults to PPPoE (yuk), I tried a Cisco Windows2000-Pro VPN client install, but it didn't work. A guy from Cisco told me he has similar setup that *does* work over PPPoE. Supposedly there is something on the VPN server that needs to be fixed to make PPPoE function (this is low priority since the SysAmins that do security are working on AD). An alternative to PPPoE is to use one of those little DSL/Cable routers, such as LinkSys.
regards,
