May be late in responding... but here's how I did it
I designated one disk & associated BCV as a test group - had a sysadmin do it. I modified a copy of all the shell scripts to only affect that BCV with all the operations (sync, split, etc.) Then I created a little test db on that disk only, backed it up, trashed it, recovered it, over and over. It was fun. The only drawback to this strategy is that I was utilizing production resources to do it - the advantage was that I was actually using something on the production hardware and would be familiar with it when the sh*t hit the fan, enough to stay calm and know which was was up.
the one big problem I had was identifying which disk was which through timefinder. I needed a lot of help to get that straight, but once we did, I was off crashing.
