forgot to mention:
i tested from root user and it worked. also it works from oracle. i think the shutdown is not calling the rc0.d scripts? i've seen this before on solaris i think, i.e. some commands call the rc scripts where some do not, e.g. halt or init 0 does not call the shutdown scripts. i am missing something that is linux specific as the same procedures work on hp-ux, aix, and solaris.
