Ya, you are right, some unix having no GUI for the first installation like
FreeBSD 4.
vi is the only one availabe there for you to configure your xwindows or KDE.

vim! Indeed my favorite editor - gvim if I feel a need for a GUI look and feel.
If you are a Unix dba, know vi - it is almost guaranteed to be available on every system you touch. Or so a wise man once told me.
And, then once it gets in your blood, you forget why you needed another editor.
