Everyone needs to remember that the Oracle Import Utility is just a 3GL "C" program with INSERT statements. It is widely publicized that the ratio is 1:4 so this should not come as a surprise to anyone. Some ways to improve performance is to use a large buffer size (10-20M) and set COMMIT=Y to facilitate array inserts. There are OS options for improving the I/O bandwidth on the file, but that's really it.

Rachel is correct. She did not want to frighten anyone. Now the good news is with Oracle9i, Oracle has added Array Inserts to the tool so this may help. How many of us remember when Oracle claimed that EXP/IMP were to go away in 8i????

Thank You

well, yeah, depending on the number of indexes, I've seen a 6 hour export take almost 24 hours to import -- on the same box as the export was done.

I was trying not to frighten anyone :)
