Hold on a minute. I run Oracle on my laptop just fine with a single drive. It would also scream with an EMC disk array attached to it. It really depends on the application(s)/user(s) you are supporting. If they can save a bunch of money and the performance impact is minimal there is no trouble with the cheaper solution. There are plenty of Oracle installations supporting small transactional systems. - Ethan

This guy is full of it. According to Loney & Theriault in Oracle8i DBA Handbook ch. 4 - Physical DB Layouts. The minimum recommended is 7 HD's. The ideal is 22. You are much better off with more smaller size drives than with fewer larger sized drives.
