I've seen this happen before under these circumstances: 1) The DB is up and running, started by the Oracle owner. 2) A UNIX user who is a member of the DBA group starts svrmgrl

   and tries to start the same instance. Now suddenly there are two    sets of processes for that instance. One is the real database    instance and the other is in some unknown wierd state, and the DBA is    confused.

This is all the more reason to keep the members of the DBA group to a minimum.
