Bill,

You are correct, this is actually the first step if you wish to migrate the 815 and 816 versions of the db's to 817.

Yes, if you started the services with the 817 software, it would bring the db's up.
I personally would not do this unless I was going to migrate the db's immediately, as you certainly do not want anything to occurr where oracle would decide to update the SCN's of an older version of the db. (My paranoia is showing.)

ps.. why can we not ask any questions? it takes the fun out of this! :)

i have a development server with 815, 816, 817 installed [don't ask.]. we have suspended development at this point in time and shut down the server.

AFAIK, if i move the correct init<SID>.ora files into the dbs directory for 817, it should read the control files for the other versions and open the databases. am i missing anything here?

and yes i know i could just try it and i would if i was given the chance. [again don't ask.]
