To find out what it is: In Windoze, type SET at the DOS prompt, in Unix, use the env command.
To set it, in Windoze type set ORACLE_SID=<WHATEVERYOU NAMEDYOURDATABASE>, in Unix, it depends on your shell, but you might try export ORACLE_SID =<WHATEVERYOUNAMEDYOURDATABASE>.
Somehow, I think this will not completely solve your problems. To look up errors, as well as some troubleshooting guides, you might want to check out OTN (I'm not their flack - I was referred to it my a list member 5+ years ago and it's helped me immensely). http://otn.oracle.com It's free.

I am not sure if i have set ORACLE_SID, how could i check if it is set?
If it is not set, how do i set it and i set it to what?
