Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Another Oracle DBA gets "The Bullet" in the - Sorry little long winded
Rao ,
Thanks for taking time and the suggestion. But
obviously both Randy and you misinterpretted what I
was attempting to say....Perhaps mine was a wrong
choice of words...SO let me explain....Jared sorry if
I am gobbling bandwidth....cyber spank me if you
want...
I have been working an a DBA for almost 10 years now.
So I have managed to cope with the task of many DBs
and stuff. My Boss is completely aware of the
pressures and short of staff etc..etc. Just the fact
that even after complaining I managed to stay at the
company should , I think , speak about my
relationships with the Project managers and
Developers(NOt duhvelepors..!) and to some extent my
effieciency ( so to speak..!! ) . When I say
'whimsies' that doesn't mean valid requests. I attend
to all the requests and finish them with average
turnaround time of 3 to 4 hours Max.( Just to give an
idea ) I work 10 to 12 hours a day not to consider the
night time when I am paged and stuff ( for issues
which I have no connection with but purely because I
always answer the phone..:) )
I will give you an example of 'whimsies'..One
duhveloper got really worked up because "even after 17
years of working with computers" I wouldn't give him
sys password. Well....I don't know about you but I was
too tired to smile and explain his notion is as absurd
as a 3 headed goat.
As you aptly put this is troubled time and no budget
for more staff. And yes I know 'perhaps this is time
to look for another one..' problem is there is
none.....I thought that is the point of this whole
thread. They ( Management )know that , I know that
they know that and they know that I know that they
know...( mmmmm....That is unneccessarily complex
isn't..?! ).I can't do anything about it but to
continue to do what I am doing and do it well....and
bid my time.
As a final note..I don't have anything against
developers....heck ours(DBAs) and their relationship
is like mutually-beneficial-parasitic
relationship....we need them to some extent and they
need us to some extent. Most of my very close friends
here are developers. I am not trying to use the word
'developer' as a leper-bell. I am just too tired and
can't seem to be having a break from some thing in
application breaking and they calling me to 'FIX' it.
If I came across strong I appologize. Thanks for
letting me rant. Any comments , please contact me
offline. My email id is raj_sakthi_at_yahoo.com
Cheers,
RS
