Oracle should not be owned by root. It is typically owned by an account of 'oracle'.

An application needs root to be able to log in to the database to create tables etc. I will be taking the access off root once the initial part of the application is run.

my question is "why are you insisting on root logging into the database???" create a new userid to do the connection.
i thought i remembered somewhere about root not being able to login, maybe that was back and hardcoded for svrmgrl.
