venkat, if you run in nocatalog mode, there are many things that you cannot do as compared to catalog mode. refer to the initial lists of the Oracle RMAN USer's Guide .. and it explicitly lists *all* the things that you cannot do if you are running rman in nocatalog mode
so basically, you run in catalog mode to be doubly safe .. to put it in a nutshell
