We often copy our Production DBs to either make Test Dbs or to rebuild Standbys by simply copying the files from our production (we use Netapp so we can copy them from the snapshot while production is still running) , bring the DB up unmounted, recreate the control file using a different name for the db, make sure the init file has the correct DB_NAME, then open up the database while resetting the logs.
I don't think you should have too much trouble.

what version of Oracle? in 8 you can open the standby read-only and turn it back into a standby when you are done.
