that will kill the job...

if you want it to continue after you log out, you should run:

nohup compress /u01/dmps/zvr_dd.dmp &

this will allow it to run disconnected from a terminal and will continue after you log out. You will get the message "you have running jobs" when you type exit, just type exit again.
