Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: but will it run windows?
Ebay uses windows for everything now.
They used to have Sun with Oracle and NT front end. Now they are completely 2000.
Hmm, no outages lately on ebay, yet there were many outages while running Sun. I KNOW Sun is more stable, perhaps it is other reasons? No way!
Micheal, I have many many NT boxes that have been up for months on end, I have many Win2000 boxes are the same. But seemly better.
Ebay does not use E10k fully loaded, they are completely SQL Server farms now.

I also heard that all of the code for eBay is written in C++ for speed.
Supposedly they have a server farm as far as the eye can see. The
contents?
All E10K's, fully loaded! That's some bucks. Anybody on this list work
for
eBay? Want to confirm or deny (we want full disclosure!!)

p.s. Just for the record, even Microsoft touts the fact that Windows
2000
Server only needs to be rebooted every week instead of every other day
as
compared with NT 4.0. There must be some truth to the fact that the O/S
isn't ready for prime-time!?!

No I did not say that.
What I am saying, is most people install 100 programs, one of them acts
like
crap and they blame it on the OS.
Because there is 5 million people programming for Win32 and probably 2 million of them suck, that is not at all the OS's fault.
The problem (in my opinion) stems from there is too many people coding
for
the os and too many hardware manufactors putting out code and hardware.
It
is almost impossible to guarentee compatability, much less competent
code.
There api is fairly open, it is almost completely published. Although it is not open source or anything of that nature.

So you're saying, unless you run only M$ products it still sucks. They
need
to tighten up and open up the API's. Then windows would be great.
