FYI, I found this on www.arstechnica.com: <http://www.arstechnica.com:>
H1B visas and the slowing economy Posted 08/13/2001 - 8:55pm EDT [Discussion

Just over a year ago, a poll
<http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?q=Y&a=tpc&s=50009562&f=286096
95&m=049091021&p=1> was posted in the soapbox concerning the potential
increase of H-1B visas issued in the United States. To my memory, it was
also the first time I had ever posted in the Soapbox. CNET has now done an a
four part article
<http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1007-201-6686403-0.html?tag=tp_pr> concerning
the plight of these visa holders in the current tech slump.
But in the few short years since arriving under the H-1B visa
program, foreign engineers and other workers have become permanent fixtures
in Silicon Valley and other centers of high technology. They have skewed
demographic trends for overall U.S. immigration through higher levels of
education, wages, corporate influence and career ambition. Even as they
become an increasingly powerful political and cultural force, however, H-1B
visa holders are facing a backlash among those who question the need to
import labor in the midst of today's economic slowdown. Opponents are
preparing to challenge the immigration program in Washington, lobbying for
more technology education among U.S. citizens in what they call a critical
need to keep foreigners from stealing American jobs.
In addition to the article as an opinion piece, CNET also provides some data
<http://news.cnet.com/news/0-1007-201-6686403-4.html> on the current state
of H-1B visas in the United States. The results of the previous poll showed
that 34% of Arsians wanted the number of H-1B visas to increase. It would be
interesting to see if opinions have changed since that poll, so here's a new
one
