having root run oracle is a bad thing(it might even be coded to not allow it).,

and did you mean 12546, the 12456 error makes no sense to me at all.

who were you when you installed the software? you should have been oracle.

the ONLY thing root ever needs to do is run root.sh at beg/end of install, then root should never touch anything with oracle again.(ok there is that stupid agent thing).
