You can check alter index clause and you will find parallel option. You may
use parallel 5 safely being default in initSID.ora. However it will start
building 5 times extent in temp tablespace before completion of rebuilding.
With rebuilding large indexes on regular basis we have to use all such
option to expedite such operation...

I am doing unrecoverable(of course) but not parallel clause. I don't think the system can handle it and to be honest w/you I don't know much about it..I am looking for a reference to doc's to learn more about it. I scrambled for space and extended temp tablespace today again and it looks like it is doing much better..thanks for your concern Mohammad.

Are you rebuilding indexes with unrecoverable/nologging and parallel clause or simple 'alter index index_name rebuild tablespace tbs_name', which is definately slow then using above options....500/600MB indexes may take around 30/35 minutes depending of your parallel clause and cpu availability...

Thank you everyone who replied. All suggestions were very helpful. I am
bebuilding my indexes in a different tablespace. It runs very very slow..
