Why default domain?

The O'Reilly Net8 book states:

"It's possible to run a Net8 network without using domains at all."

If this is true, why create net service names that are qualified by a domain name, why define a default domain in sqlnet.ora, etc.? What benefit do you get by setting things up to use a domain?
