lock problem

Hi,

we need to create a index on hot table(lot of updates r going on) but we r getting error:
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-00054: resource busy and acquire with NOWAIT specified when i use create index........online it just hangs there....... Is there any option to create index while not stopping the batch updates.
