Also, make sure the .profile is executable. It isn't by default usually. Also make sure the oracle account is setup to use a shell that the .profile actually applies to. For example, ksh (my personal favoriate). C shell uses the .login.

Take a look at /etc/profile - this is the default system-wide user profile (be aware that all changes to this file will affect all non-root users on the system).
