Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> CAST Related White Papers
Listers,
As I've been working my way through a lot of new features in 8 and 8i, I have now moved on from the analytical functions to the CAST function. Anybody have some good links on this feature and great ideas on when to use it to solve typical issues that we might have handled differently in the past?
I've done a Usenet search via www.deja.com and come up with some pretty neat examples addressing different needs. I've seen a top N application of it. I've seen a way to use it as an "IN" clause when passing a comma delimited list to a procedure. Some neat stuff.
When going through the analytical functions, there was info in various Oracle documents, but, what got me over the hump and made the light come on a bit brighter was a white paper I found. It went into more detail and examples than anything in the Oracle docs. I can use ep's google gun (as someone referred to it) to search for "cast oracle" or "cast oracle SQL", but, it returns thousands of hits. Sure, I can wade through it all, and I'm doing that right now. But, if someone already has a good link or two to white papers, etc on this subject, I would appreciate it.
Basically, I'm trying to find out practical uses of the function, when and how I might apply it to things I do a bit differently today. In other words, in what situations will it make things much easier to do.
Regards,
