8.1.5 has some known performance problems, but 8.1.6 resolved them.

I always run timed_statistics = true.

There is a slow down of .1-5% depending on who you talk to, I don't think it is much more than 1%.

Can anyone give me a guess as to the performance hit of doing this ?

Running Oracle 8.1.6, there are fairly predictable periods of high, medium, and low load so I can avoid collecting stats at peak periods if necessary.
