If that is the cause, RAID 5 does not suffer the performance hits during read operations, but can prove as much as 60% performance loss than a single disk on writes. With write-back cache (accellerated controller) it can be significantly less depending on the controller.
If it is truely near read only, Raid 5 is "acceptable" as you will get good performance but if you do decide to write it will be slower. But concidering there are very few writes, there will also be little contention.
I would stick keep my logs off Raid 5 if at all possible.

Guys, this is not an attempt to start that "old" discussion but:-
I have been told to install Oracle + a DB on an IBM RS6000 box with nothing
but a RAID5 disk array on it.
I have explained my misgivings on this but I am told that the DB will be
used mainly for read-only
operations with very few modifications to the data (apart from the initial
load of 100GB....).
Any ideas on the best approach, given the circumstances........
Thanks all
Martin Kendall
