IMHO "shortcut" and "replication" are mutually exclusive ;)
For configuring replication I think the manuals are pretty good, for general replication principles I'm rather fond of
Oracle Distributed Systems, by Charles Dye http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/ordistsys/
I'm also forwarding you my paper on Replication Do's and Don'ts.
