You do not have to leave the country to get your TN renewed. EDS simply put the paper work in for me and later I get the new copy. However, you cannot just show up at a border and get to work in the country. You have to meet certain minimum requirements and have proof that you do, you have to have a letter but it has be have certain information in it that is specific to info they need and you have to get an immigration officer that is in a good mood. Because I did not have a lot of time to come out here (the weekend was the notice I got) I took a big chance flying across country to possibly get turned back at Vancouver. Its much better to have the paper work done ahead of time and TN in hand.
When I first came out here I worked for EDS Canada so I paid Canadian tax. Now I work for EDS America and actually have a Social Security number so I pay US tax (what little they pay). You pay tax to the country you make the income, from not the country you are working in.

I am still sorting out that TN visa business - I am not sure but I think one has to go back to their country of origin at least once a year, to update the visa. I was told that all I need is US$55 at the border, with a letter of offer from an American employer.
I have no idea how that would work - e.g. accepting a "permanent" position in the U.S. on a TN visa. Where would I pay income taxes? Canada? The U.S.? Nowhere?
