Thanks, I stand corrected. Before your post, it was all the same to me.
I have personally never "bought in" to the Sun striping ideology. It has always seemed pre-cooked to best support what I consider to be weak I/O hw on vendor side.

It is
those two "all"s that are definitive. What you did was intelligent broad
striping with selective I/O separation. That's not "semi-SAME"; it's
contra-SAME. The only thinking that SAME allows for is putting "hot"
data like
redo logs on the outside of the disks (if you can).
SAME is all about sex appeal with almost no brain power. I would not
even flirt
with it, let alone consider a long-term relationship.

I forgot to mention:
We assiduously separated table from index...across controller and channel...and we separated "hot" and "cold" data tspaces as well.
There's nothing like having enough disk and I.O.
