Depending upon the version of Oracle; which you neglected to mention, and depending upon whether or not you are using bit-mapped indexes and depending upon if you are doing inserts into the associated table, bit-mapped indexes grow exponentially with inserts!
At least the bit-mapped indexes did/do so for use on all versions of 8i on V2.6 Solaris.
